The Daily Telegraph Book of Sports Obituaries
This title of sports obituaries complements the series of "Telegraph" obituaries edited by Hugh Massingberd. It comprises of a collection of obituaries of sporting greats who played, competed and died in the 20th century: heroes such as Bill Shanky, Denis Compton, James Hunt, Fred Perry, Kitty Godfree and more. Together they reflect the sporting century and tell us something of the events that have shaped the last 100 years. The entries are gathered from both sports and the obituaries pages of the "Telegraph" and will tap into the resources of such by-lines as Michael Parkinson, Christopher Martin-Jenkins and Donald Saunders. Martin Smith's introduction discusses the impact that the deaths of sporting heroes have on us: a part of our childhood has died and we allow ourselves a wallow in nostalgia.
