Review Text

The subtitle is unfortunate: this sensitive selection from the great bulk of Lawrence's poetry is for All People - an attractive introduction to the might-be-unfamiliar, could-be-formidable (as per Crowell Poets precedent). In the preface, Mr. Cole communicates enthusiasm for the man and his work, and some insight into both. He rightly points out the more-than-apparent affectiveness of the animal poems, the largest group here. Also, there are rueful reflections on the human condition; there is sustenance in thought ("a man in his wholeness wholly attending") and fidelity ("the gem of mutual peace emerging from the wild chaos of love") - which is to say that this is not so much about adolescence as the matrix of maturity and would mean most to older teens (who might balk at that subtitle).
