Not illustrated. 1886 edition. Excerpt: ...and unknown to literature till he was fifty years of age, although he had written much during the past twenty-five years of his isolated life. The work consists of short essays, paragraphs, and epigrams, on very many subjects, each containing a single thought independent of the others. These thoughts are divided into classes, and embraced under such heads as literature, eloquence, history, mind, time, love, God, the family, etc. The book created considerable excitement in France. Although some of the "thoughts" are commonplace, many of them are MOO. A. H. H. J. W. Dickinson has arranged for the publication of a new periodical, The Elocutionary Magazine of St. Paul and Minneapolis. The first number will be issued November 3, from Minneapolis. Houghton. Mifflin, & Co. will soon publish "A Century of Electricity," by Professor T. C. Mendenhall. This book will contain accounts of the discoveries made in electricity during the last hundred years. We are promised another contribution, ere long, from Mr. Howland, the author of "Bookishness." He is an attorney, and resides at Indianapolis, Ind. A rather notable thing in connection with that piece of work was the ease with which the author held off from technical legal lore. In that regard alone, his essay was a study for lawyers with literary leanings. A subscriber at Austin, Nev., in renewing his subscription, sends us the following letter: "I would find it difficult to get along without The Current. Aside from its literary merit, its financial views are eminently sound, which appears to be a rare thing for a paper so near the Atlantic border.
