Current Issues : MacMillan Social Science Library
This four-volume reference is written at an eighth grade reading level and presents material that ninth graders typically need for research projects; older students can use the articles as starting points. Many of the articles are gathered from other Macmillan titles ( Encyclopedia of Sociology, ...of the American Constitution, ...of Bioethics, and Civil Rights in the United States ); some have been prepared specifically for this set. About 250 topics (e.g. abortion, academic freedom, acid rain, labor movement, marijuana, marriage) are treated in articles of about 3,000 words, presented in a legible, uncluttered layout; sidebars of definitions, quotes, and extra information, and some b&w photos, support the text. Each volume devotes 64 pages (about 25 percent of the total pages) to identical end matter: a glossary, additional sources list, photo credits, and a cumulative index.
