Cuckoo Marans in the Taproom
Derek Brock's father-in-law was an irascible and legendary country publican at the 16th century Six Bells Inn at Penmark, who expected his son-in-law to follow in his footsteps. Despite his inexperience of the bar trade, young Brock rather liked the idea of dispensing pints to the locals. He hadn't bargained, though, for the three dozen Cuckoo Maran hens, six store cattle, three sows and litters, and a varied assortment of other livestock that went with the job. Little wonder, perhaps, that his father-in-law had retired early with heart trouble!
