Review Text

Coren is a wit - and real wits are rare. Best known in Britain for his contributions to the radio News Quiz, television's quirky word-game Call My Bluff and as a columnist in The Times newspaper, he has also distilled much of his work, especially his newspaper columns, into a series of hilarious 'collections'. This is his 26th, and he shows no signs of flagging, even though, together with most other writers, he 'extrudes words with all the enthusiasm of a man removing his own eye-teeth'. He shows in his work absolutely no intimations, of pain or stress, and the reader must be mentally agile and attentive to keep up with his verbal dexterity. His mind is razor-sharp and deadly accurate; he savours words and ideas with all the satisfaction of a gourmet tasting rich and complex food - though with an agreeable dottiness which raises them to the realms of the surreal. For those unacquainted with the lesser-known London suburbs, Cricklewood is among them and it is where Coren lives, writes and ruminates. In this volume, as in others (in his own words) we meet 'not only the prehistoric landscape of Homo Cricklewood and the glitzy resort of Cricklewood-sur-Mer, but also the flying sheep, the talking cat, the rise of Conkervision and the fall of Proust' not to mention 'the day when the Isle of Wight sank beneath one Chinese too many' and a contemplation of the soccer skill of H M the Queen. A varied diet for the reader, and one to stimulate the laughter-muscles. A book to dip-into for those spare moments before the light goes out or the morning coffee calls. (Kirkus UK)show more
