During the fifteenth century the Spanish Crown wrested control of the Canary Islands from the Berber-speaking natives. Over the succeeding centuries the islands have been Europeanised to such an extent that the average visitor might think that all trace of the pre-Spanish culture had been lost long ago. After graduating in archaeology with geography in 1973, Mike Eddy worked on excavations of all periods throughout Britain before he joined the Archaeology Section of Essex County Council's Planning Department. While there he directed several major excavations and contributed to a wide range of conservation projects.
