One of these, the Rev. D1'. Robert G. Vilson, was the pastor of the First Presbyterian church at (.'hillicothe from 1804 until 1825. He was also the founder of the Ohio universit_v at Athens, Ohio, and was its first president. Mr. and Mrs.' Ball have two children: Bessie, born February 18, 1879, who is now the wife of Frank _ Lovell Xelson, of ('hicag"0, and Lieut. William Gustin Ball, Third United States infantry, born April 19, 1875, who, after acquiring his preliininary education in the Chillicothe high school, pursued such special courses of study and training in eastern colleges as would best qualify him for his contemplated profession. On May 12, 1898, he was commissioned by President iIcKi11le_v as captain and assistant quartermaster, United States volunteers, with which rank he was assigned to duty as a brigade quartermastcr, Seventh United States arn1_' corps, wherein he served throughout the Spanish--41nerican war and until his honorable discharge December 3, 1898. On, October 15, 1900, he was commissioned a second lieutenant of infantry in the regular army of the United States by President ilclinle_', since wliiclr date he has served continuously in the Philippines, both as company commander and as battalion quartermaster, and where, already, his zeal and etficiency have won the commendation of his seniors in rank.
