Review Text

The trot-away success of Herriot's All Creatures Great and Small (1972) may rub off on this memoir of a British DVM. But where Herriot's book glowed with good taste and high humor, Dr. Farrier seems more interested in catheters than characters - beast or human. The author records his adventures in veterinary schools (replete with practical jokes involving hurled animal parts), in Egypt and environs with the Army, and the highpoints and doldrums of his rural practice at home. It's a case-by-case recital: difficult births, blown cows, milk fever, baffling ingestions (a cow swallowed a tennis ball; a dog a fish hook), and the emergencies prompt heavy attention to surgical techniques and a disquieting mention of what goes into the slop bucket. Dr. Farrier is undoubtedly a good chap at heart - he is a proponent of humane euthanasia - but animal lovers won't like his insensitive estimate of the fox ("a solitary, dedicated, calculating killer") or certain irresponsible acts - he told a dog owner to come back for stitch removal but "I didn't tell her I wouldn't be there." Stick with Herriot. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
