A Country Awake at Midnight
No one slept that night, for every citizen had donated their eyes to their Television sets as their eager ears grew progressively bigger on either side of their burdened heads - it was the stuff of legend; but this was no dream, it was reality - a new nation was born and the man who made it happen was Gabriel Chukwuma Olubukola Onokpono, aka GCOO, the new President of Africa's most populous nation. His route to the presidency was a stark deviation from the norm: on his wedding night, being a total unknown in the nation's political circles and at the age of 22, in a country where no one less than 50 had ever become President, he appeared on the nation's leading TV news channel, and announced that he would run for the presidency in 12 years and become the President every patriotic citizen had dreamed about for generations. Sometime later, he started a social media site that he called The End of Silence - a place where fellow patriots deliberated on how to bring about the birth of a new nation; and within two years, it had hit a milestone of ten million registered users. Making the unconventional choice of a woman Vice President as no woman had ever been President or Vice President in the country's history; he employed the power of the internet to get an astonishing ninety percent of eligible voters between 18 and 30 years old to register and decide their nation's future - that age bracket rarely participated in the country's electoral process. Five years before the elections, while still unaffiliated with any political party, he decided that his administration would deliver TEE to the citizens of his beloved country within the four years of his first tenor - TEE being his acronym for Transportation, Electricity and Employment - citizens usually had electricity for about two hours a day, the unemployment rate was put at 60% by experts although the government's own statistic stood suspiciously on 20%; and the transportation infrastructure was dilapidating and grossly inadequate. Now it was election night and the results were tending toward the inevitable, GCOO, it seems, was going to be the next president; the results were set to be announced at midnight - the country was wide awake. Sleep was pushed to the borders of the nation by the hands of patriotism and banned from re-entry by desire; the sockets of human eyes ran towards the edges as the souls of men yearned for a new day; their hearts within their bodies longed for change and their spirits groaned from the pains of ill governance. Earlier that day, the people of the most populous black nation on the earth had defied the rains and hissed at the heat of the sun - alas at midnight, their desires were granted, at midnight, the announcement created victim-less earthquakes all over the land, at midnight, GCOO was declared President-elect and jubilations so vibrant, caused the earth and the moon to join in the dance of humans. Four years later, TEE had been delivered; GCOO was re-elected and is regarded as the greatest President in his nation's history.
