Bake in layers--four layers. ICES. Whites of three eggs, three cups of sugar, one cup of water; boil sugar and water together until it strings; pour in gradually in the beaten whites; while hot beat until it thickens; put between the layers and on the top.--MRs. C. H. R. CHOCOLATE CAKE. One cixp of sugar, one-half cup of butter, onehalf cup of milk, two cups of flour, two eggs, one teaspoon of soda; boil until smooth one half pound of chocolate, "one-half cup of milk, one cup of sugar, yolk of one egg, then add one teaspoon of vanilla; when cool inix with the above and bake in jelly tins. Icing for the above: Three cups of sugar and one cup of water boiled together until like thick syrup; then pout slowly over the whites of three eggs beaten light. Beat all till sn1ooth.--MRS. F. L. O. CHOCOLATE LOAF CAKE. Coffee cup of sugar, one-half cup of butter; onehalf cup of milk, two cups of flour, two eggs, one teaspoon of soda; now boil until smooth; one-half pound of unsweetened chocolate in half a cup of milk, one cup of sugar, and yolk of one egg; mix the sugar and egg, then add the milk, then chocolate. When cooked to the consistency of mush add the vanilla and let cool, and stir all into the cake and bake.' Frost with a cooked frosting. MRs. T. B. F. COOKED FROSTING FOR CAKES. One cup of sugar and four tablespoonfuls of hot water. Let boil until it hardens in cold water. Then pour very slowly into the beaten whites of three eggs; beat until cool.--MRs. T. B. F.
