Excerpt: ...shattered the rock shall become loosened or shattered where any masonry, including dry packing, is to be built in contact with the rock, all such loose or shattered rock, as well as all rock debris, earth or other loose material, shall be completely removed prior to beginning the masonry at that place. The fact that such removal may enlarge the excavation beyond the required limits shall not operate to relieve the Contractor from the necessity of making such removal; and the Contractor shall be entitled to no additional compensation on account of such removal and enlargement, except as provided under Item 21. This does not include raking out of seams or veins of unsound rock beyond the limits of the actual excavation. Sect. 36. Trees and other obstructions shall be removed J""8 tllc from the sites of the proposed structures when and as directed, but may be removed from other areas only to the extent directed or permitted. The sites of storage piles shall be cleared fjl piles of all bushes, and except as otherwise permitted, of all trees; and all stumps shall be cut off close to the ground before depositing material in such piles. The sites of all spoil-banks sues of shall be cleared of all trees which are more than 3 inches in diameter, measured at a hight of 2 feet above the ground, all stumps shall be cut off close to the ground, and all bushes and small trees which are permitted to remain on the site shall be so covered as not to come within 2 feet of the finished surface. Acceptable materials obtained by the clearing operations may be used for the work; the remainder shall be burned or otherwise satisfactorily disposed of.
