Since 1979, when the second edition of Erika Fromm and Ronald E. Shor's classic Hypnosis was published, the field of experimental hypnosis has expanded enormously. Filling the need for a definitive reference that incorporates the plethora of ideas and methodologies that have emerged over the last 13 years, this completely new volume continues in the Fromm-Shor tradition by presenting an authoritative survey of contemporary hypnosis research, methodology, and theory. To provide the reader with an even-handed, complete treatment of all currently prominent research areas and theories in one book, chapter authors were selected to represent the entire range of the field. Divided into three parts, the book first reviews both the theoretical perspectives and history of hypnosis research. Chapters in Part II cover empirically based theories with discussion of dissociation, psychopathology and psychological regression, as well as explication of a social-psychological approach and an ego-psychological theory. Surveying the broad areas of hypnosis research, Part III presents chapters on an array of topics including research design and considerations, phenomenology, neuropsychophysiology, and methodology in psychological research. Situational and personality correlates of hypnotic responsiveness and the effects of hypnotic procedures on memory are examined, and the relationship between hypnosis and creativity is discussed. Other subjects covered are the experiential method, self-hypnosis and personality, clinical research, and the measurement of hypnotic ability. In addition, the editors have gathered the book's over 1,450 references into one large bibliographic section, making this an idealresource that will be used often and easily. Veteran researchers and theoreticians will find the chapters on theoretical paradigms and programmatic research in this scholarly resource both informative and challenging. Students and beginning researchers will find CONTEMPORARY HYPNOSIS RESEARCH to be the perfect hands-on tool, providing them with conceptual underpinnings, methodological perspectives, and scholarly documentation. Psychologists, social workers, physicians, and other clinicians who wish to gain better empirical and theoretical understanding of the field will find it an excellent reference.

Review quote

""Contemporary Hypnosis Research" co-edited by Michael R. Nash, will likely be regarded in the same esteemed fashion as its forerunners in constituting a significant contribution to the hypnosis literature...I persist in regarding "Contemporary Hypnosis Research" as a "must-have" component of the library of every serious hypnosis clinician and researcher...Any researcher or clinician who deals with forensic hypnosis or clinical applications dealing with memory retrieval needs to be familiar with the excellent treatment of the relationship between hypnosis and memory presented by McConkey...an indispensable tool in assisting clinicians as well as investigators in mastering the growing body of available hypnosis research."--"American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis"
"This significant and scholarly survey by Fromm and Nash consists of reviews by some 28 well-known researchers who can speak authoritatively in their respective areas....this publication is an excellent and welcome contribution to the scientific study of hypnosis. Researchers and clinicians alike can profit greatly, not only by reading it but even more by giving it careful study. It should both improve the caliber of future experimental investigations and increase the utilization of hypnosis research by clinical practitioners." --"Contemporary Psychology"
"A most up-to-date survey of the the current status of hypnosis....Should be of great interest to all in the area of hypnosis research." --"Choice"
"An authoritative survey of contemporary hypnosis research, methodology, and theory, which will benefit not only students and beginning researchers, but veteran researchers, theoreticians, and clinicians as well."--"SciTech Book News"
"Student researchers as well as veterans of research and theory will find the book useful." --"Hypnotherapy Today"
"Fromm and Nash have edited an outstanding collection of research, theory and practice, giving hypnosis the scrutiny of scientific method which it has so desperately needed....it also deals with contemporary issues such as hypnosis and creativity, and behavioral medicine. It also looks at many of the assumptions we have accepted as facts in hypnosis, and challenges them. This is one of the best reference books I have ever seen." --"The International Journal of Professional Hypnosis"
