A boycott was also the cause of still further enlarging the wholesale work by going into the manufacture of shoes. Since the societies entered into shoe production a bitter hostility has been aroused by the wholesale shoe dealers to such an extent that the manufacturers have been compelled to refuse to sell shoes to the co-operatives. Accordingly it became necessary to manufacture shoes on a larger scale as soon as sufficient sale could be guaranteed. In 1912 the congress of the societies provided for erecting a shoe factory at Basle. This went into operation in 1913 with a daily capacity for producing 600 to 700 pairs of shoes. Finally, the Union has entered upon agricultural enterprises, and a variety of industrial, merchandising, and farming undertakings. The Press of the Union The results which the Union has been able to attain have been in a large measure due to the careful development of a press of its own. The diversity of languages in Switzerland has had to be met, but the organs of the Union have not resorted to translations but have used only original material for each. Only by so doing was it possible to secure results in all parts of the country. The Union publishes the following organs: "Schweiz. Konsumverein" (German; weekly; editor, Dr. H.
