An eligible applicant for a regular position is advised to accept appointment as a Special Protector until an opportunity for promotion to the regular service is available. Every Special Protector is assigned to a Division, where he comes under the instruction of the Inspector, and attends meetings at which game topics are discussed and instruction is given in conservation work. As time passes, he becomes more and more familiar with the requirements of his position, which as a " regular " he will some day fill; When a vacancy finally occurs, the Special Protector is ready and trained to enter upon his duties, and has had the benefit of experience. Here begins the second part of his studies, for now his schooling starts in earnest along entirely different lines. The present system of training was devised and instituted by the Chief Protector now in office. It is known as the " General Order " system and operates along lines similar to those of a correspondence school. " General Order " lessons in conservation work are regularly prepared and issued from headquarters. These may comprise directions as to work to be done, or may contain DESIGNED T0 WORK HAVOC AMONG TROUT SIXTY-FOUR SONG BIRDS SE IZED FROM ONE FOREIGNER opinions affecting the law, or a series of questions, the answers to which may depend upon a knowledge of the penal code, the conservation law, or upon common sense and experience. At the following monthly," Division Meeting," a general discussion acts as a review of the subject matter of the orders, and fixes them in the Protectors' minds more firmly.
