An eligible applicant for a regular position is advised to accept appointment as a Special Protector until an opportunity for promotion to the regular service is available. Every Special Protector is assigned to a Division, where he comes under the instruction of the Inspector, and attends meetings at which game topics are discussed and instruction is given in conservation work. As time passes, he becomes more and more familiar with the requirements of his position, which as a " regular " he will some day fill; When a vacancy finally occurs, the Special Protector is ready and trained to enter upon his duties, and has had the benefit of experience. Here begins the second part of his studies, for now his schooling starts in earnest along entirely different lines. The present system of training was devised and instituted by the Chief Protector now in office.
