On the uight of 26th I left Burkeville and came back in company with Mr. Stowell and Mr. Feruald, I think, but I am not positive, to Washington. On the way back on the train we had some talk about the affairs of the District, &c., and in the course of the conversation I distinctly recollect Mr. Stowell asking me when the balance of the money would be paid--the balance of the $1,000. I told him that I presumed that Dr. Beattie would pay it within a few days; that I had no doubt about it; and he stated then that unless it was paid he should withdraw the designation. That was on the 26th, as near as I recollect. I stayed in Washington until about the 29th or 30th, and on the 28th, I think, he got me the appointment of special agent in the pension service, which I held uutil the last day of June, a month and two or three days. Mr. Stowell got on the train on the night of the 2'Jth, as far as I can recollect, and said he was going north, or west by the north. I left that night on the ll-o'clock train which goes by the Fredericksburgh route to Richmond. I went out to Dr. Beattie's, and he gave me another draft, for 8700, signed by his wife. It was on the same bank, the firm of which William B. Isaacs and Taylor and Williams were the members. The reason I cannot recollect exactly the style of the firm is that they have changed the style three times since I have been in the South. Mr. Beattie, I think, wrote his name on the back of that last check or draft for $700. I went to Burkeville and remained two or three days, and came back to Washington.
