These gallant sons of America do not complain, although many of them must die. Every soldier and sailor who fights and dies is making secure the lives, the liberties, and the wages of railroad employees and all who stay at home, and, at the same time, is contributing to make the world safe for humanity and democracy. It is necessary that the employees of the railroads should understand that the decision made in Supplemental Order, No. 4, can not now be reviewed except in the particulars therein provided for, and that it is the duty of patriotism to accept that order loyally: that the time has come when we must give our undivided thought and attention to our work in order that we may turn out the amount of transportation absolutely required to make our armies victorious on the fields of France and our Navy triumphant on the high seas. We can not do this if our minds are continually distracted by efforts to increase wages and change conditions. We can not do this unless we devote ourselves to our work with a patriotism and unselfishness equal to that which our sons and every other American's sons are devoting to their work on the field of battle. We cannot justify to the American people the great increase in wages and the immense improvement in working conditions already granted unless every employee proves by his work that he is worthy of it. I want the men to prove themselves worthy of it and I believe that they will.
