From the above table it will be seen that over nine-tenths of those under 14 years of age at time of coming to the United States are at present able to read and to read and write, while of those 14 years of age or over 67.5 per cent can read and 66.6 per cent can read and write. With the exception of the Irish, who show that a larger proportion of those who were 14 or over than under 14 years of age at time of coming to the United States can read and write as well as read, the other races show smaller proportions of those over than under 14 fears of age. This difference is much more pronounced with the brtuguese than with any other race.. Those 14 years of age or over at time of arrival in the United States show 36.2 per cent who can read and 33.2 per cent who can read, and write, as compared with 90.9 and 89.6 per cent, respectively, of those under 14 years of age at time of arrival in the United States. Of all races furnishing information, the Greeks show the smallest proportion under 14 years of age; also, with the exception of the Portuguese, the smallest proportion 14 years of age or over at the time of coming to the United States who can read and both read and write. The French Canadians, on the other hand, show a higher percentage of literacy, with the exception of the Irish, than any other race, 91.9 per cent under 14 years of age at time of arrival being able to read and to read and write, while of those 14 years of age or over at time of coming to this country 80.9 per cent can read and 78.4 per cent can read and write.
