We only take care of those who are in want of aid as to employment, and as to pecuniary assistance now and then. Q. Are their tickets purchased on the other side? Do they usually come on prepaid tickets?--A. Well, a number of them come on prepaid tickets. What I mean to say by that, Mr. Chairman, is that such as have relatives here send the money to some agency out in Europe--if that is to be understood as prepaid ticket--I suppose it is. Others come here because they are driven away from places of residence iu Russia and Poland. Driven from one place to another, and finally they find no other refuge than this country, and they sell or they transfer what little they have into money aud purchase thir tickets, and come here and rely upon either relatives or the assistance of their co-religionists to come to their rescue, which is done in many cases. Q. In a measure you accept them as political exiles?--A. We do to a great extent. We think that inasmuch as they were persecuted on the other side on account of their religious belief they ought to receive a welcome here. Q. You say their persecution is entirely on account of their religious belief, aud not on account of their morals or the practices they engage in?--A.
