Do they sell their beef in El Paso?--A. No, sir. They did sell some of their beef there about a year and a half or two years ago. I do not know whether they are sending in any in boxes now. I think the local butchers have the market now, but for years they did send, in in boxes. Q. How long since was it that the company refused to furnish you cars to ship cut meat?--A. About the 1st of February of this year, 1888. Q. Did you make any complaint to the Interstate Commerce Commission, or elsewhere, upon the subject?--A. I do not think we did. I do not believe that the manager did. I have not heard that he did. Q. He accepted the thing as final and quit?--A. Yes, sir; he was compelled to quit. He made a hard fight to get cars. We could have Bhipped in box-cars by using our own ice without using the refrigerator cars. We could not get box cars. Los Angeles is about 800 miles from El Paso, and we coukl go over in two days. Q. Did you meet any competition from the rangemen of New Mexico and Arizona f--A. We bought lots of cattle from those ranges, though rarely from New Mexico. But that competition did not trouble us, because the supply was limited. About fifty head a day did not interfere with their trade, and theirs did not interfere with ours. Q.
