I'm not sure that retirement parties are still a 'thing' in all industries these days. But I'm almost certain that in the dog-walking business they are a rarity. Despite this, there I was, standing in what was for a long time part of my 'office' space, a big, beautiful, sunny off-leash dog park. I knew every tree, every twist and turn and bump in the ground. I was surrounded by most of my loving 'daytime babies' (as I called them) and their various owners and families. I'd shared my life with these dogs, some since they were just pups, and had become a vital part of who they are, as they had been a vital part of who I was. Yesterday, a Friday, I put away my dog-walking shoes, threw away my sun-faded cap and returned the keys from my janitor-esque, heavy-as-a-brick keychain. I'm ready to move on from this chapter in my life to new things, but I can't help but think back to the beginning, to how I came to be this crazy dog lady working in a job I thought would be one of the easiest.
In reality, I became a professional poop-scooper, family counsellor, fly on the wall, community organiser, emergency contact, secret keeper and animal expert all rolled into one - and in all weather conditions. The stories I could tell! In fact ...
