Review Text

Chronologically arranged citations show the way most proverbs and sayings have been handed down and sometimes mutated over the centuries, whereas others have established themselves after quite recent coinage. About 1000 proverbs are included here, from Britain and North America, arranged alphabetically by key word. The subject index supplements a helpful cross-referencing system. Greatly improved layout, expanded commentary on some of the proverbs and even a few new ones are features of this edition of an enjoyable and illuminating work. (Kirkus UK)show more
