Excerpt: ...admitting several defects and imperfections, yet is there nothing like it to be found in these western parts of the world, and to those who will give themselves the trouble to examine it carefully, it will approve itself to be the result of deep thought, and of such subtile contrivance, that although we may not perhaps approve of its astronomy, yet we shall not fail to admire its uncommon art and ingenuity. It must be said, in justice to the Jews, that they have, in their several dispersions, and under the greatest disadvantages, zealously endeavoured to observe the annual returns of their moveable feasts, in their appointed seasons, with a due fense of their obligation to a divine law, and in as near a conformity to it, as they have been able, since the time that they lost all knowledge of the primitive kalendar, and, together with it, the sure and never failing direction of the original aera, and its characters. We know from the Jewish historian Josephus, who wrote above 1700 years ago, whilst the second temple was standing, how they interpreted the precept of the law concerning the paflbver. " We annually kill the passover, fays he, on the 14th day of the month Nisan, according to the moon, when the sun sun is in ariesand, under these circumstances, the modern Jews observe it to this day. Thus, then, they interpret the precept of the law concerning the passover, which Moses delivers in these words, namely, Levit. xxiii. 5. In the iih day of the first month, at even, is the Lord's passover. Here is no mention either of the month Nisan, or of the moon, or of the sun in aries.
