About Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born on May 22, 1859, in Edinburgh. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and began to write stories while he was a student. Over his life he produced more than 30 books, 150 short stories, poems, plays, and essays across a wide range of genres. His most famous creation is the detective Sherlock Holmes, who he introduced in his first novel, A Study in Scarlet (1887). This was followed in 1889 by an historical novel, Micah Clarke. In 1893 Conan Doyle published The Final Problem in which he killed off his famous detective so that he could turn his attention more toward historical fiction. However, Holmes was so popular that Conan Doyle eventually relented and published The Hound of the Baskervilles in 1901. The events of the The Hound of the Baskervilles are set before those of The Final Problem, but in 1903 new Sherlock Holmes stories began to appear that revealed that the detective had not died after all. He was finally retired in 1927. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle died on July 7, 1930.

This is the complete series of the original novels and short stories relating the adventures of Sherlock Holmes: that in itself should suffice for a review, because let?????????????????????¢??????????¢???????????¬??????????¢???????????¢s face it, there really is little to say beyond ?????????????????????¢??????????¢???????????¬??????complete original Sherlock Holmes?????????????????????¢??????????¢???????????¬?????? to know you?????????????????????¢??????????¢???????????¬??????????¢???????????¢re getting an incredible treat. And on the strength of the contents alone, this item should get five stars. Unfortunately, it only gets two stars for the following reasons: First, presenting the complete Sherlock Holmes in only two volumes means that your paperbacks are going to be slightly awkward to handle: indeed, coming in at well over a thousand pages, you know Volume 1 is going to suffer spine damage after only a couple of readings, regardless of how carefully you hold the book. It seems to me it would have been better to split the series into three or four more reasonably-sized volumes. Second, the flimsy slipcase is a joke, and not a very good one at that: it is about as strong as a box of tissue paper and certainly does not travel well. Had the packaging been more appropriate, the slipcase might have survived the trip across the pond. As it were, whoever packed this item was trying, in Dolly Parton?????????????????????¢??????????¢???????????¬??????????¢???????????¢s words, to ?????????????????????¢??????????¢???????????¬??????stuff ten pounds of *** in a five-pound bag?????????????????????¢??????????¢???????????¬??????. The cardboard package did not quite close, nor did it hold the books properly, and it failed to offer sufficient protection, so that when I finally received the books, the slipcase had been deformed beyond being serviceable and the spine of Volume 1 had been wrenched sideways. I understand that any item shipped through the post over such a distance is at risk of suffering some damage, but I should point out that this is the only one, out of eighty or so received thus far, that came in such a sorry state. This could have been avoided simply by choosing a slightly larger packing box, and possibly by unfolding the slipcase and shipping it flat. Perhaps even shrinkwrapping the set would have been sufficient to ensure it was not harmed excessively. I don?????????????????????¢??????????¢???????????¬??????????¢???????????¢t know. I won?????????????????????¢??????????¢???????????¬??????????¢???????????¢t send these books back because (a) it would be very expensive, and (b) there?????????????????????¢??????????¢???????????¬??????????¢???????????¢s no way I could purchase these books here, in Mexico, at anything like this price. Still, I am sorely disappointed, most of all, in the lack of planning on the part of whoever shipped this more

The information shown on the webpage is incorrect (the hardback bit extra). It is really confusing saying that it is a hard back when it really is not. I support the (NOT HARDBACK) comment on the misleading information but I disagree on the two books bit. They are good but the box is abit flimsy. Otherwise it is a good collection of more

These are 2 PAPERBACK books, that fit in to a cardboard box, That does NOT constitute a "hardback book". I specifically wanted hardback, as I already have these in paperback, and am extremely disappointed in the misleading description. I am still trying to decide if I will bother with sending them back or not, as the return shipping would likely cost me close to what the books did in the first place.. Shame on you, for either not knowing your product better, or intentionally misleading buyers.. But, the books in general, are a fabulous set, my old ones have been read so many times, over so many years, that they are literally in pieces, which is why I wanted more

I just received today my order from The Book Depository. The quality is great, almost new even. Too bad that the Bureau of Customs here in the Philippines decided that the bulky-looking package looks suspicious so they ruined the bottom of my boxed set. :( If I only knew they'd rip open the package I would have bought the 2 books contained in this set more
