Description

Given equivocal evidence about whether these "peoples's colleges" promote upward mobility for working class and minority students, the ten contributions apply micro-level dynamic-interactionist (as vs. macro-level static-structural) approaches to research how community colleges confront the challenges of diversity. Some studies are grounded in traditional data-oriented qualitative analysis, whereas others engage in "critical qualitative analysis" accenting theoretical constructs based on actors' power positions and views. Topics include: cultures of support for at-risk students, identity issues, responses to ideological messages about work, and the multicultural community college of the future. Annotation c.
