Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. In telecommunication, a commercial code is a code once used to save on cablegram costs. Telegraph companies have always charged based on the length of the message sent-and this has not changed since the 19th Century. To this day telex messages are charged by the word. When telegraph messages were the state of the art in rapid long distance communication, elaborate commercial codes which encoded complete phrases into single words were developed. For example "words" as BYOXO, LIOUY, BMULD, or AYYLU.
