Review Text

Roberts is unsparing in focusing on the economic consequences of colonialism and, in general, one must admire his attempt to squeeze the whole saga of imperialism in Asia, from Vasco da Gama to the Bandung Conference and its aftermath, into a brief outline. On the other hand, this format is so restrictive that one might not realize that Gandhi was active before World War II, and Korea and Vietnam become just two more footnotes to the failure of neocolonialism. Roberts' essay might help bolster a primary text weak on the concept of imperialism; students taking their first unsupported step onto this unfamiliar territory will need a more solid introduction.
