I know how much the samiliar and plain way of explaining Scripture, as it is called, is preferred by the many; and it ever will be the state of the multitude: it was their voice that called for the golden calves; that demanded Saul for a King, and that cried out, with Priests, their Leaders, to Pilate, Crucify, Crucify him. I have explained in the fullest manner every part of the Daily Service at the Temple, and shewn its dignity and reality by the gospel; which teachers have not preached, nor have people heard for centuries. If Paul had so much labour to raise the minds of his converts to spiritual conceptions, so as to give Jlrong meat to the Adult; if he so much rebuked those who were carnal, adhering to the legal service of meats and drinks, of observing Days, Months, Times, or Tears, called here weak '. elements elements of the Law, that he feared, least he had laboured in vain: if he cautioned them, that no one should judge them touching meat or drink, or an holy day. (festival) or in respect to the moon, or Sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the body or substance is of Christ. Gal. iv. 10. Col. ii. 16, 17. I say again, if this apostle (who was so savoured with more abundant revelations than all the rest, ) was compelled to reproach converted Jews and Gentiles, that, when they ought to be teachers for the time, they had need to be taught the first principles of the oracles of God, for they have need of milk, and not of strong meats; for he that uscth milk, is unskilful in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe.
