Review Text

??et in the time of the Second Punic War (Rome, Carthage, Hannibal), this novel deals not with the war but with several interrelated lives behind the battle-lines. Zonas, a Greek trader in Italy, is robbed by one roving Carthaginian band and rescues a young Roman, Karus, from another: he finds his home, wife, and work on the estates of Karus' mother. Dasius, another Greek trader, voyages to Carthage and becomes the friend of a Carthaginian sea-captain, but during a Roman raid, he rescues a Roman (Karus' long-lost friend) from prison camp: he ultimately pays for his split loyalties by being killed accidentally in a sea skirmish. The complex relations between the two traders, who choose sides circumstantially, and the young Roman officers, and the Carthaginians, offer interesting glimpses into life behind scenes during sixteen years of war, and there are nice views of Roman and Carthaginian life on farms, estates, and war-torn towns. But there is too little sense of the outside historical events, and despite interesting private story-lines the book tends to be somewhat impressionistic, a personal interpretation. Bryher has been acclaimed for these qualities in her historical novels, and this book does have plot appeal and a feel for its time. Nevertheless, its lack of sharp focus makes it slow going.
