Effective therapy programmes for perpetrators of domestic abuse is one way of reducing damaging psychological and physical costs to society. However, the author proposes that the philosophical and methodological approaches of such a programme must be adaptable to multiple explanations of domestic abuse. Abuser Schema Therapy (AST)is presented as a cognitive behavioural based programme that provides flexibility within a 20 week framework. It draws on cognitive behavioural techniques that are underpinned by bio-evolutionary theories, attachment, and cognitive theories of emotional development. The effectiveness of the programme is evaluated on a group of male perpetrators who voluntarily seek help from a community therapy centre. Case studies are used to illustrate individual schemas relating to abusive behaviour. Development and maintenance formulations are used to determine factors that interfere with effective therapy. In conclusion, this book will be of interest to all practitioners who work in the field of domestic abuse, especially therapists who work with perpetrators.
