Since the tonic accent exercises so great an effect on the syllables which follow it, it is to be expected that it have some influence over the syllable which precedes it; and it does, for in certain portions of the Romance field it has so much power over what precedes that instances occur where even initial protonic vowels disappear under the influence of the accent.
