The spindle is provided with a clamping device by means of which it can be firmly locked during cutting operation, relieving the worm and worm wheel and index pointer of all strain; and thereby avoiding unnecessary wear. This clamping device is so arranged as to not disturb the accuracy of the head. The front end of spindle is threaded to receive a chuck. When not in use the thread is protected by a guard collar. ' The head is provided with two dividing mechanisms, viz: worm and worm wheel with side index plate, and cup-shaped index plate for direct indexing, 1'. 8., without use of worm or worm wheel. It is regularly supplied with a single index plate which is drilled on both sides, is easily reversed and provides all the divisions usually obtainable on a Dividing Head by the regular method of indexing. This avoids the necessity of caring for extra plates and making frequent changes, to secure these divisions. For obtaining the special divisions which usually call for compound indexing arrangement, we supply special plates at small cost. The plate is of large diameter, permitting large holes and consequently a substantial end on the index pin. For rapid indexing on such work as milling reamers, taps, nuts, etc., and cutting spur wheels with less than 40 teeth, the worm may be disengaged from worm wheel and cupshaped index plate used. This is fastened by a nut directly on spindle, and may be used on all divisions from 1 to 20 inclusive, and all ez/en divisions from 22 to 88 inclusive.
