Excerpt from The Church of Christ-the Church of the Future: A Sermon Delivered at the Installation of Rev. Stillman Clarke, as Pastor of the Congregational Society in Wilton, N. H., June 11, 1857
I respect theology, but I dare not call it religion. I dare not say that any man, or body of men, or church, has been able to compress within the boundaries of their intellectual formulas, or define by logical analy sis, that deep, spiritual mystery, the religious life Christ formed in us the hope of glory. I cannot be lieve that the celestial arcana of the spiritual world -yea, the deep things of God - may be known, except by the spirit Of God, as Paul declares in our text: which things we speak, that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
