The time-honored hallucination about "Essays in Latin" for juniors and seniors still appears for the amazement of the uninitiated, as well as the phrase " Speeches 1 once each week," with its Delphic ambiguity, that has i frightened many a " prep." There are many things of this sort. Wouldn't it be well to advertise in plain terms our intellectual wares? It is not a difficult matter to represent anything as excellent on paper, and hence these representations have little value to one who knows. A catalogue, to be sure, is the only available means of getting a college before the people; but an institution whose reputation is already established has no need of even the slightest misrepresentation. The class lists this year are unusually faulty. Several men who are in full standing with the senior class are catalogued with the juniors, and so on down. This is the result of little else than carelessness, and causes no little chagrin to the ones thus misrepresented. Our advice would be to put the catalogue of i873'4 through a second edition. There seems to be but one opinion about Mrs. Livermore's lecture, and this fact makes it much easier and pleasanter to notice. It is not an agreeable duty, this acting as mouth-piece for the current opinion of our audiences, because it occasionally happens that what one considers a successful lecture, another thoroughly dislikes and necessarily the dictum pronounced is not always a truthful representation of the general conviction.
