Excerpt: ...sure premonition that some grave subject concerning the future of the republic, when he becomes a citizen, is weighing upon his mind, and engaging his undivided attention. During the earlier part of his course his thoughts were taken up more with self, but now with broader views and more philanthropic ideas of affairs in general, he patriotically decides to sacrifice himself pro bono publico. Yet how to do it, that is the question. Some have already decided how they can best benefit themselves and humanity, while others are still struggling in mazes of doubt, unable to extricate themselves satisfactorily. The former class of persons rush along as if their fate was inevitably sealed, and a sort of I-don't-care-a-clam-shell expression of countenance abides with them continually. You might as well attempt to stop the rushing Niagara as their impetuous course--metaphorically speaking. The others, still undecided and troubled with the magnitude of their own thoughts, and the mightiness of the problem which they are about to solve for their country's weal or woe, move along more deliberately, scarcely knowing whether to undertake this task in a strictly professional way, or in a more practical, matter-of-fact, business style. At sudden intervals they appear alternately in hot and cold water--a very uncomfortable way of taking a bath, tepidity being generally preferred. This is to be attributed entirely to the excited state of their cerebrum. To be or not to be is the important question, and the importance of it grows upon them continually. It is to be hoped, however, that all these things will be settled satisfactorily before class statistics are made out.
