Review Text

Despite its tacky title, this is a charming, beautifully illustrated selection of 100 seasonal poems by poets such as Betjeman, Coleridge, Cummings, Laurie Lee, Spike Milligan, Shakespeare and Wordsworth. The contents are refreshingly varied, and include hymns of praise and celebration; quiet reflections and even some provocative and wry thoughts such as this one from Thomas Hardy: 'Peace upon earth!' was said. We sing it, And pay a million priests to bring it. After two thousand years of mass We've got as far as poison gas.' On a lighter note, there are also lots of old favourites, including 'In the Workhouse' and 'Christmas at Sea'. Highly recommended. (Kirkus UK)show more
