Review Text

Dickens called his Christmas Books 'A whimsical kind of Masque, intended to awaken loving and forbearing thoughts.' They were hugely successful, especially A Christmas Carol and The Chimes, both immediately becoming popular plays. Most of the books involve visions, dreams or nightmares changing lives for the better, the metamorphosis of the miser Ebeneezer Scrooge being the most famous. Dickens' hallmarks are here: social satire, social comment, large families, affectionately drawn; and the wonderful Dickensian names, Mr Snitchley, Mrs Peerybingle and Molly Swidger, among them.
