Excerpt: ...of disposition, a general sympathy in the habits and the sources of the pleasures--virtues which can command respect and concentrate admiration and confidence when the sweet first bloom and freshness of natural affection have rubbed away, should all be taken into account. Above all should be regarded that sympathy in religious views and that strength of religious principle which is the only real guarantee for private personal virtues, and without which a permanent happiness is, I believe, impossible. Such are the considerations of reason and conscience which should act at the first beginnings of an attachment before it is allowed to gain strength. But I fear that the light and amusing side on which alone this subject is apt to be regarded, hides this just view of things, and encourages that habit of attachments lightly formed which is the source of an untold amount of misery in private life. It is a solemn and a serious thing--this partnership for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, for life and till death, and it becomes Christian men and Christian women to view it seriously. It is true this is rather the threshold of the subject I have proposed to myself in this section, than the subject itself; and yet it is the necessary preparation for the irrevocable step which, once taken, never can be recalled: the relation of husband and wife and their mutual responsibilities throw their influence backward over the beginning as well as forward over the continuance and end of married life. It is its Christian aspect I have to deal with, and not merely its social or its earthly side, though I believe that in reality they are all one and the same.
