Review Text

Fortunately the People's Republic of China is now well represented by a shelf full of post-detente reassessments, so that one can afford to make fairly subtle distinctions among the available, acceptable titles. Here, the Loeschers spend little time on history and concentrate on a rather formal review of party, government, and army institutional structures. Also, their profiles of typical city dwellers and commune farmers include a basic explanation of how the Chinese economy works and how income is distributed, and their chapters on propaganda, education, and health care are excellent and up-to-date. However, the Loeschers function throughout as defenders rather than analysts - for example, they present only the Chinese view of the Tibetan issue, speaking of reconsolidation and social reform, rather than annexation. This, then, is a careful and factual (if somewhat dry) introduction, though the determination to present every aspect of The Chinese Way in a positive light is cause for caution. (Kirkus Reviews)
