The intelligence having reached us that a number of missionary societies were about to undertake work in several of the stations occupied by us, we concluded that it would be more profitable to remove our workers elsewhere. Mr. Adams, who with his family was working in Nan-kin, first proceeded to Wun-chau to assist Mr. Douthwaite for a few months, as the state of health ol the latter was at the time causing us considerable anxiety; he has since taken charge of a station in Kin-hwa, a prefecture of the Cheh-kiang province. Our premises in Nan-kin were subsequently let to a member of the Presbyterian Mission, and they have since been occupied by members of their staff. In Chin-kiang our premises had been very unsuitable for missionary work; the growth of the port having led to the erection of a large number of Chinese houses, principally inhabited by unfortunate women. Our girls' school was therefore removed to Gan-k'ing and the premises were disposed of. The work in Yang-chau was carried on till August, and in the estimation of Mr. Tomalin was in a more encouraging state than he had ever known it. Nevertheless, as other missionaries were willing to occupy the station, and as our need of labourers elsewhere was for the time being very pressing, we removed the school to Gan-k'ing, and with it Misses Smalley and Hughes; letting our newly-built premises to the American Episcopal Mission and returned to their owners the older premises which we had occupied since the riot in 1868. A certain amount of work is still carried on in our old house in the city of Chin-kiang, and also in T'singkiang-p'u.
