Review Text

A British writer with a strong, deep imagination brings a lonely boy's mind alive as she details the first days of small Toseland's visit to his great-great-grandmother's. Sent there by his parents who are in Burma, Toseland arrives at rain-soaked Green Noah- in the country near London- in a mood of bewildered despondence, but his basic and very warm curiosity responds immediately to the certain something in his Granny that treats him as equal and as companion. Because of their mutual interests, Granny soon begins to tell Toseland stories about his 17th century ancestors and what they did as children when they lived at Green Noah when it was known as Green Knowe. As the stories unfold Toseland and Granny experience the other children as real people and fantasy playmates who enrich their world for them. The happy outcome of Toseland's adventures is also a natural one. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
