Review Text

An obstacle course not worth fighting, set in the Israel of 70 A.D. A betrayingly stilted translation handicaps both story and reader - it's tensely present-tensed, too literal, more distracting than affecting. And the pace is insupportable, insuperably slow, from Part One, "The Revolt," where a group of Zealots try and fail to defeat the Romans, to Part Two, where "The Community of Children" emerge from the safe cave where they'd been concealed. During the next six years, after finding total desecration, they build a new brotherhood under Avshalom's leadership; when all is well he goes off on "The Search" for surviving villagers - his enslaved girlfriend Rachel, his dispirited parents, and Yehudah the bravest Zealot, now imprisoned. Caveat. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
