Not illustrated. 1869 edition. Excerpt: ...18..) R. to K. second 18. P. to Q. Kt. third 19. Kt. to Kt. seventh (check) K. to Q. second 20. Kt. to Q. sixth R. to K. second And though Black has a somewhat difficult game, he still retains his Pawn, and I think with care will get out of his embarrassment. In the above variations it is worthy of remark, that White was not compelled to take the Queen's Pawn with Pawn at the nth move, but might have retired the Bishop to Queen's third. In this case the following is probable: --12. B. to Q third B. takes Q. P. 13. Q. to K. Kt. third R. to K. Kt. square If White now take Queen with Queen, Black retakes with Pawn, discovering Kt.toK.B third check, and has unquestionably the better game. If White play 14. P. takes Q. P. he is mated in two moves. Again, if he play 14., Black replies as in the previous variation with 14., and the first Kt, to K. B. fourth player cannot now take off the Knight and check at Queen's sixth, on account of the threatened mate. Of course the foregoing variations are merely tentative and experimental, niust be accepted for what they are worth. Possibly they may be altogether erroneous, but I venture to submit them, as they appear to me to touch upon "- only part of Mr. Fraser.s analysis which falls short of absolute demonstra"on. Should Mr. Fraser, however, on further examination, succeed in establishing the validity of his attack against the line of defence above indicated, there can, I think, be no doubt that the check of the Queen at the third move of King's Bishop's Gambit will have to be abandoned as theoretically defective and untenable; for unless it can be safely followed up with 4.--P. to K. Kt. fourth or the purpose of maintaining the Gambit Pawn, the check at Rook's fifth is not only so more
