Reaction gas supplied to the periphery of this chamber flows over the outer surfaces of the two disks specified, and through passages in these discs into the space within the inner electrode. Powdered reagents may be blown through an annular slit or sep. nozzles in the inner electrode into the arc disk. Cooling gases are supplied through water-cooled axial pipes and through holes in the disks outside the inner electrode. The mixed products and cooling gases are collected by a water-cooled annular jacket at the circumference of the said flat chamber. Electromagnets rapidly rotate the arc or arcs, or produce oscillations of great amplitude. In another arrangement, three or four concentric ring electrodes are connected to a polyphase system, and rings of nozzles project reaction and cooling gases outwards in planes parallel to the rings. Other modifications are specified. soln. in vacuo. While the K amalgam formed by the use of KOH constitutes the best reducing agent it is also possible to use compds. other than those of K, e. g., those of Na, NH, Al or Mg. Zinc. In the form specified, Zn vapor from an elec. furnace passes through a pipe to a condenser, to which motion is imparted by means of gearing, rotating disk, and eccentrically mounted rod. The condenser has a tap-hole for molten Zn, and an outlet for gas and vapor. In other forms, the eccentrically mounted rod is moved by a crank, or is connected to a crank pin on a rotating disk.
