Description

Welcome to the worlds of Chrestomanci, where magic is as common as mathematics! Everybody says that Gwendolyn Chant is a gifted witch with astonishing powers, so it suits her enormously when she is taken to live in Chrestomanci Castle. Her brother Eric (better known as Cat) is not so keen, for he has no talent for magic at all. However, life with the great enchanter is not what either of them expects and sparks begin to fly! Winner of the Guardian Award.show more

Review quote

"!Her hallmarks include laugh-aloud humour, plenty of magic and imaginative array of alternate worlds. Yet, at the same time, a great seriousness is present in all of her novels, a sense of urgency that links Jones's most outrageous plots to her readers' hopes and fears!" Publishers Weeklyshow more

Review Text

Children waiting for the next Harry Potter should try these for size. The stories about mysterious enchanter Chrestomanci are just as beguiling. The real world exists alongside a fantasy one in which magic is used routinely. It all starts in Charmed Life, which won the Guardian Award when it was originally published in 1977. Gwendoline discovers she is a witch and is sent to live in Chrestomanci Castle but life is not all roses. The Magicians of Caprona moves to the Italian Dukedom of Caprona where feuding families suspect each other of sabotage. Witch Week is set in Larwood House a school for witch-orphans now threatened by a visit from the Divisional Inquisitor. Written after the first book, The Lives of Christopher Chant takes the reader back 25 years to Chrestomanci's childhood. Mixed Magics contains four short stories about Chrestomanci, one of which is brand new. (9+ yrs) (Kirkus UK)show more
