Let me then endeavour to take a survey of our position, and to trace the steps by which we have been brought into it; and if in so doing I should seem to dwell on things which are perfectly fami liar to you and to the Church at home, or on things which are external rather than spiritual, you will easily understand the reason of it, on considering the ignorance and the misconceptions which still prevail respecting us.
We now no longer present ourselves to the notice of the Churches in the countries of the Mediterranean as isolated chaplains or missionaries.
