Chaos Space : The Sentients of Orion Book Two
Having fled the invasion on Araldis, Mira Fedor travels to the nearest Orion League planet seeking aid for her devastated world, but the authorities seem more interested in stealing her bio-ship, Insignia, than in rendering help. While Mira flees from world to world, Araldis burns. The more Mira uncovers, the more mysteries she finds: why is the initiate Tekton taking such extreme measures just to acquire a mineral alloy? Why do so many of the protagonists in this galaxy-wide drama have links to the Stain Wars? And what part does the Sole Entity - literally, God - have to play ...?

Chaos Space is the sequel to Dark Space and the second in a projected four volume space opera series. Marianne de Pierres has managed to take the excellent foundation that was laid in Dark Space and turn it into something rather special, a space opera series that hits almost every note.

We flee from star system to star system with Mira -- and a group of mercenaries in tow -- as she struggles to come to terms with the violation committed to her by the Princepe, Trin, to ensure himself an heir. With the authorities more interested in her bioship, the mercenaries doing their usual underhand business, and no help coming from anywhere, we are treated to a great and in-depth look at a good, strong female character. On the other hand, we follow Tekton as he attempts to create his masterpiece for Sole, the God entity. His behaviour and self-importance are out of place in the environment where he now lives, but his free, logical mind work together to create someone who is obnoxious yet crafty. Tekton is someone who is at worst annoying and at best devious, but full of character and enjoyable to read. Many of the other characters fall in between these two, each with a story that you want to hear and a path that will lead to further discovery.

Chaos Space is a fine novel in its own right with plenty to enjoy, but as a series the Sentients of Orion has huge scope and promise. With more questions raised again by the end of this one it can firmly take its place up there with the better series of recent years.

Highly recommended.

Mark Chitty
show moreby Mark Thwaite
