Since the death of both of my parents within a period of seven months, I've been suffering from panic attacks and depression and have found this book tremendously helpful. Ive already read it twice and found it very uplifting. The author writes from the heart, with sensitivity and passion, obviously motivated by empathy and compassion towards people suffering from these debilitating conditions, and with a genuine desire to help them. Having experienced a bout of anxiety and depression himself, the writer combines his expertise in psychology and counselling with personal experience, to provide a clear and concise, step by step explanation of the reasons for negative thinking (which he says is the main underlying cause of anxiety and depression). He explains that these problems are often caused by a number of distortions of thought such as looking at the world through a "negative filter" (or as he puts it, through "a pair of dirty glasses"). He details ways in which we can fight negativity, and approach our lives without fear, with optimism and hope for the future. The author writes unashamedly and with honesty, revealing the many tough times he has faced in his own life, and the strategies he has used to overcome them, including cognitive behaviour therapy, guided imagery or visualisation, meditation, affirmations, commitment and discipline, as well as goal setting. As a spiritual person, he talks about times in his life when his belief in a higher power has given him strength, comfort and inner peace. The book is full of personal anecdotes, as well as case studies and recommendations for further reading. The writer makes the book fun to read too, with his many humorous stories and witty remarks. This is a great book - very inspiring and motivating! I highly recommend it.show more
