As the services of this house of prayer may, if rightly used, upbear our minds and exalt our thoughts to heaven, so, if we attend them in a light and irreverent spirit, they will contribute to sink us down to hell! And our fall, if we do fall, will be the greater, our condemnation the more awful, the greater the opportunities for good we have perverted. Of none will the ruin be more inevitable and complete than of those who, having turned the very grace of God into lasciviousness, into mere wanton and sensual enjoyment, have received that grace in vain! One chief means of protecting our souls from this shipwreck of faith is reverent and habitual attendance at the Table of the Lord. And of that none need ever withdraw from this cathedral disappointed; the holy Table is decked every Sunday for the feast of love and thankful reminiscence. Only let none be deterred from approaching it by fear of unworthily partaking. If this fear be the fear begotten by godly awe and self-distrust it is actually a qualification for receiving rightly. Those only should not dare to come who come as a mere matter ot course, without self-examination; who lack that sense of sin which is the first symptom of a regenerate heart, and which seems to be almost dying out in these days; those, therefore, to whom Christ is a mere historic personage, not a living Saviour.
