Description

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1922 edition. Excerpt: ...a heavy line from which hangs a row of strokes. Encircling the body: Athletic contests: A nude boxer taking long strides to right, with long hair, a cord tied around his waist, and outstretched arms, is about to strike his opponent, who is down on one knee and holds up his right hand with the forefinger extended upwards as a sign that he is vanquished. He too has long hair, but wears a loin-cloth. 232 232 Fig. 54(a) Fig. 54(b) An umpire or trainer (paidotribes) to left, with long hair and mantle, staff in uplifted right hand, hastens to the scene. To the right of this group is a warrior balanced on one foot to right, with loin-cloth, shield and crested helmet, hurling a spear at a target, which consists of two triangular projections on top of a post. By the rippling of the shaft the painter evidently intended to represent the quivering of the spear as it passes through the air; it has, however, not yet left the warrior's hand. On the other side of the target is another paidotribes rushing off to right, but looking back; he is draped as the other trainer, but holds his staff in a perpendicular position; parts of his body are wanting. All the figures are full of action and vigor. Two examples of this rare fabric are in New York. See "Bulletin of the Metropolitan Museum," VI (1911) p. 31, Figs. 3 and 4. 233. Fig. 55. Amphora. H. 9 in. Brownish-yellow clay, the unglazed parts covered with red paint, black metallic glaze, superimposed red and white. Incisions. Slender body, flat shoulder, offset neck with a raised ring at base, offset lip with sloping sides and flat on top, flat handles, foot almost disc-shaped. Edge of foot unglazed; top black; lower part of body and upper part below handles black; outside of handles black; inside and...show more
